Oxygen Conservation
We are a business set up to Scale Conservation.
We are founded on the belief that there is an urgent need for the private sector to play a role in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises. Our goal is to protect and restore 250,000 acres of land by 2030 and demonstrate that people and business can live and work alongside nature. We aim to redefine what is possible in conservation and in business, delivering positive environmental and social impact first and generating a financial return as a result not as the purpose of what we do.
SCALING CONSERVATION
We Scale Conservation by raising private finance, acquiring land, and investing in the protection and restoration of the UK’s natural capital assets.
Each of our sites is beautifully unique, and for each site we agree a set of environmental and social targets that are bespoke to that landscape. We work to deliver these targets, restoring natural processes, protecting biodiversity, and creating new homes and jobs. This creates a range of natural capital products, such as carbon credits, that we sell to a small number of carefully selected partners so that we can deliver environmental and social impact at an even greater scale.

WHY CARBON OFFSETTING
We all need to reduce our carbon emissions to Net Zero to avoid irreversible damage to the planet, and our way of life.
We cannot offset our way out of the climate crisis. But offsetting can be a critical part of a wider Net Zero strategy that focuses on avoiding and reducing emissions. First, we need to focus on lowering our carbon footprint. Then we can use carbon credits to offset any emissions that cannot be tackled through other means. This puts a price on the carbon we produce and creates a financial incentive to reduce it.

On its own Net Zero is not enough. The climate and biodiversity crises are inextricably linked.
We cannot tackle either without protecting and restoring the world’s natural habitats. This means that carbon credits need to deliver genuine impacts for both the climate and biodiversity. Our projects focus on the restoration of the UK’s most precious habitats, with the finance raised from the sale of carbon credits being used to deliver high quality, impactful conservation projects at scale.

A UNIQUE FARMING PARTNERSHIP
A new approach to farming that provides food, carbon, and conservation.
Wood Advent is a farm that has been in the Brewer family for seventeen generations. It is a farm that can trace its history, and its curious name, all the way back to the Anglo-Saxon hamlet, Oda. It is a farm that wears this history in its landscape – from the Neolithic enclosures still visible to the careful eye, to the whispers of the long-lost medieval manor, the 18th century cider press still very much in situ, and the WWII bomb craters that pit the rise from the sea to the moor. In 2022, the latest chapter in the farm’s story was written, when a unique partnership was agreed between Oxygen Conservation, Kate, David, and their two children. This is a partnership that will allow the Brewer family to farm at Wood Advent for future generations, by transitioning towards a sustainable, organic agroforestry model that provides food, carbon, and conservation.

PROTECTING A LOST WORLD
Saving one of England's last remaining rainforests.
The Leighon Estate is located on the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park, nestled in the picturesque and peaceful Bovey Valley looking up to Hound Tor. It’s rumoured that the Tor was the inspiration for the legendary ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’, and its rich cultural heritage makes the area of national importance, attracting hikers, explorers, and sleuths from across the country and beyond.
Alongside the spectacular cultural heritage is an even more spectacular natural one. Described by the Woodland Trust as a “rare and exceptional site”, Leighon is home to one of the most important areas of Atlantic rainforest in the country. This rare and precious habitat supports a huge diversity of species including thousands of ancient trees entwined with lichens and bryophytes. Stepping into this rainforest habitat is often compared to stepping into a portal to a lost and forgotten world. Leighon Estate is positioned between thousands of acres of protected landscapes meaning it is of strategic importance for landscape scale conservation. Protecting and restoring this ancient forest will provide the centrepiece of a huge new Super National Nature Reserve – with Leighon sitting at its heart.

ALLOWING NATURE TO BREATHE
The story of a landscape told in two halves.
Esgair Arth is a magnificent coastal site set against the breathtaking backdrop of Cardigan Bay. Home to Europe’s largest population of bottlenose dolphins, this is one of the most biodiverse and beautiful parts of the country, with the nearby town of Aberaeron being voted the best seaside town in Wales thanks to its unique Georgian architecture and access to this wonderful marine environment.
Located at a strategic location within the catchment, Esgair Arth plays a critical role in maintaining the richness of the Bay, with its extensive area of oak woodland running alongside the Arth River helping to provide a steady stream of clean and clear water flowing into the sea. Thanks to the richness and importance of this woodland, it has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, helping to protect it throughout decades of change.
However, the story of this unique landscape is one of two halves. While one side of the site is covered with biodiverse native woodland, the other is empty and devoid of life. After years of intensive grazing, the trees have been pushed back behind wire fences and forced to cling on in the last remaining protected fragments. This is a site which is crying out to breathe and expand, for the oak woodland to reclaim the hillside and spread across the landscape once again.

HEALING AN UPLAND HILL FARM
A chance to heal the scars of the past, and restore a unique part of the Yorkshire Dales.
Covering almost 500 acres, Swineley Farm sits in the Widdale Valley within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The site is a complex mix of rare habitats, from blanket bogs to meandering rivers, and an outstanding example of an upland hay meadow, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. These rich habitats make it a wonderful site for birds, providing a home to some of the UK’s rarest species, including curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher, skylark, and black grouse.
However, Swineley is also a traditional hill farm that has been worked hard for many years, propped up with artificial fertilisers and chemicals to facilitate overstocking and destructive grazing. The properties on site have been abandoned and neglected to the point of collapse, creating a perfect example of the damage people have done to the natural world, and the ways in which conventional farming practices can adversely affect the environment, people, and the local economy. Today, Swineley provides an opportunity for us to start healing some of this damage, and to restore a unique part of the Yorkshire Dales.
